What made us great according to Thomas Friedman
This was his bullet points
1 Education
2 Infrastructure
3 Immigration
4 R & D
5 Regulations
I listened to 45 seconds of this and stopped.
As for me I’m going with the fact that this nation was founded on the rights given to us from the Creator of the Universe.
We hold these truths to be self evident…
“Geekonomics”
It’s not “Freakonomics”, it’s “Geekonomics”
I was listening to Carl Franklin on his podcast “The Tablet Show” and at “mile marker” 26:00 he gave the audience his view of Economics
In terms of promoting the value of the individual that’s essentially what this new economy does. If forces us to say "what can I do with myself that will make me unique where there isn’t anybody else but me" … and that’s how I make myself valuable maybe it’s the combination of skills that I have (that are rare or specialized)
I would add to Carl’s comments these things…
- I would argue that you need to define the domain of this new economy as limited to building apps for the mobile device or businesses that are related to that.
- The next question is how would do you monetize what it is you want to do once you figure out your "special purpose".
- Making a living on 1$ profit per app sales seems highly unrealistic, so the point of the app is similar to OSS. What your interested in doing is making yourself (i.e. your talents) addictive and in demand. With that you will have a customer base who will directly or indirectly allow you to monetize your talents.

Uri Harel’s Monday Night Hebrew Class Farewell Party
Last night, (Monday 2/13/2012) a party was held in honor of a dear friend Uri Harel who is moving back to Israel.
UPDATE! I added Pat Power’s Photo Album, see below at the bottom
I just want to say that I really respect Uri. I had attended his Monday night Hebrew class on a regular basis since 1995. What an honor and great opportunity it was to learn from a Jewish person who was born in Israel and whose native tongue was Hebrew. It is hard for me to fully appreciate how much I gleaned from him because of his passion for the Hebrew language and the Torah and his willingness to teach.
Most people in America, like myself, are raised up speaking English and are also taught scripture (if they are taught scriptures at all) from only a Christian perspective. To read the Word of God in it’s original language was something that was not taught. Uri’s Monday night class was very simple but also very powerful. It did not mater where you came from or what your religious beliefs were, all that matter was that you had the same passion. The “secret” was to let the scriptures speak for itself and to define its meaning without regard to the religious filters of Rabbinical Judaism or Christianity. I dare say there is not to many people in this world who, like Uri, are willing to make this opportunity available to people like myself. An opportunity such that all would gather together to study and not let preconceived religious ideas get in the way. Simple. Powerful.
I will miss not only Uri but his wife Bruya and the wonderful times we all had together at their house celebrating the Shabbath. The Friday night dinners and the great discussions on the scriptures that followed was a real joy.
Below is a photo album from pictures I took. The party was graciously hosted by Marsha in her beautiful home. All who had attended had a great time as did I. Before I show the photos I want to quote a verse from the scripture by a most famous rabbi that is apropo to Uri.
“For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the Torah, till all be fulfilled. Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.”
Farewell Uri, may our heavenly father bless you and have his face shine upon you and your family.

Tzur Yisrael 2011 Annual Mikva
The Shabbath on October 1st 2011 was the annual mikva for Tzur Yisrael.
The running water we use is the Salt River. Below is a modified picture of the nearby mountains.
Our ritual is like any other Shabbath service
| we do prayer and praise | |
| we read the parasha study for that Shabbath. This year it was Leviticus Chapter 3, #24.2 | |
| a woman lights the candles. This year it was Kye Thompson | |
| we do the blessing over the bread and wine | |
| we have a pot luck (doesn’t everything important involve food) | |
| finally we do the Mikva (aka full immersion baptism) |
Here is the procedure that we have adopted while doing the actual mikva…
- The witnesses say “baruch b’shem Y’shua” (be blessed in the name/authority of Y’shua)
- The one doing the mikva falls backward in to the water fully immersed
- after coming up, the witnesses say “baruch b’shem YHVH” (be blessed in the name/authority of YHVH)
- The one doing the mikva says “hinani shenani” (here am I send me)
- Then everyone yells “Hallel Ya” (praise Yah).

Instructions and photos on building my sukkah
Here’s a photo album that I took while building my sukkah. The dimensions are 8’ wide by 8’ deep by 7’ tall.
Notes about the photos…
- The door faces the front
- The left side and right side are relative from the outside looking into the door
- All markings are on the inside (the exception is on the top of the bottom boards)
- All nuts are in the inside of the Sukkah
- The four aluminum upright polls for the corners are not on shown
Material cost was about $140 for the wood and the hardware. I figure about another $140 for the windows screening material that I want to use to wrap the sides. For the top and the bottom I plan on using vinyl from used billboard material.
Special thanks to Gale Webb for allowing me to build it at his house and for the use of his tools.
Other Sukkah’s
Here are some more sukkah photos I collected just for fun.
Sukkah Accessories I might like
- $130 Bass Pro Camp Kitchen
- $120 Cabela Standard Camp Kitchen
- $120 Cabela Deluxe Camper Kitchen
- Need something to hand that’s light weight so I can hold clothes etc.
- I already have my sun oven.
The American Seder Update

This is an update on the “American Seder” for the Fourth of July 2011.
Overall the event went very well specially considering this was our first attempt. I counted that we had 35+ people.
Special thanks to Uri Harel, Jackie Shephard, Steve Grosvenor, Kiki Sabanis and all the others who showed up and helped out.
I created a public folder for people to view which can be found here.
It contains photos (here and here) audios (Part1 and Part2) and other stuff
Suggestions
- read the 10 commandments in Hebrew
- clean up the Haggadah…e.g. compact the songs into multi-columns
- better marketing…press conference?
- ???.

Announcing My Hebrew Bible web site
I have successfully created my new web site called My Hebrew Bible. With this web site it allows me to do many things that I was primarily doing with this blog namely informing people at TYoAZ of the upcoming parasha (Torah reading). Now that it is much easier to disseminate this information using www.MyHebrewBible.com, I have decided to discontinue doing that here in this blog.
In the future, please visit http://MyHebrewBible.com/ParashaHeader.
