UPDATE – An Overview of the Teleconference

A download of this audio can be found HERE.
Please note, this are my notes and recollection of the teleconference and I take full responsibility for them. If you want to correct the record by all means add a comment (see below). If you want to hear the words directly from the “horse’s mouth” download the audio and listen for yourself. Thank you from the management.

1) About Shaul (Paul)

  • Introduction by me (John Marsing)
    I suggested that although most (if not all) of those who were critical of Paul for not being supportive of Torah were not on the teleconference, it would still be a good to discuss the issue so that we could have a recording. I also suggested that it seems the point was rather academic because in the end the members of TYoAZ are Y’shua believing and Torah observant, so whether or not Paul is anti-Torah or could be argued that he is, TYoAZ will still continue with its mission. I also hypothesized a theory that maybe some of this anti-Paul sentiment comes from patriots who are angry with the government and they don’t like Paul’s (seeming) defense of it (see Romans 13). I also said from what little I did read from Scott’s website that his motivation for being critical of Paul was that Messianichs will never be successful of helping Christians unless we get rid of Paul. For the record I do not share that view.
  • Richard pointed out that one of the complaints of Paul was that he only quotes the golden rule (to love your brother as yourself) and not the Sh’ma Deu 6:4.
  • Herb believed Scott Nelson ( Judaism vs Christianity website) was advocating that 1) with our own right we can earn salvation, 2) Abraham did not need salvation and 3) that he is trying to knock down not just Paul but the New Testament. Herb also talked about his personal story of being involved in a very strict congregation that led many people astray because they did not learn the skills on how to approach scripture.
  • Gabriel (a friend of Yoseph) said that if you believe the veracity of the book of Acts (which also means you must also accept Luke) then Paul was chosen by Y’shua himself and therefore we should try to honor his (Paul’s) words.
  • Mike K. brought up how it is unwise to constantly be critical of YHVH’s defender of his word. He gave a personal testimony of a professor who would always be trouncing on King David and that he eventually ended up in an insane asylum.
  • Yoseph gave his personal story of a group he was involved in also began being critical of Paul and eventually the whole group walked away from Y’shua.

2) What to read for the next five weeks starting after next week

  • There was a consensus that we would 1) start Genesis with the intent of going very slow though the first couple of chapters, 2) continue with Joshua (which is similar to how we had started the triennial Torah cycle) and 3) start a systematic approach to reading the major prophets (which we have never done in the past). It was suggested that Ezekiel should be read first and it was tasked to Richard and myself to create a reading agenda for this. It was also concluded that we would not read Psalms like we had in the past.
  • A task was given to Richard to investigate a Michael Rood source of his and determine if there is a harmonious gospel that we can use as a replacement for studying how we studied the gospel previously.

3) Revelation chapter 20 and 22

  • This was not discussed because the necessary attendees to disuss this topic were not on the call.

Extra Topic) The 99 sheep and the 1 lost sheep

  • John Mackinnon pointed out that his study from an actual sheep herder is that when he does go searching for a lost sheep, he tries to protect them by making a makeshift temporary corral. Ken pointed out that man’s best friend also is left to guard them. Susan pointed out that the Father is always with us (i.e. the 99 sheep) and it’s ok that the Messiah seeks that one lost sheep.

Judges Chapter 7:1-7 שׁוֹפְטִים

א  וַיַּשְׁכֵּם יְרֻבַּעַל הוּא גִדְעוֹן, וְכָל-הָעָם אֲשֶׁר אִתּוֹ, וַיַּחֲנוּ, עַל-עֵין חֲרֹד; וּמַחֲנֵה מִדְיָן הָיָה-לוֹ מִצָּפוֹן, מִגִּבְעַת הַמּוֹרֶה בָּעֵמֶק.  {ס} 1 Then Jerubbaal, who is Gideon, and all the people that were with him, rose up early, and pitched beside En-harod; and the camp of Midian was on the north side of them, by Gibeath-moreh, in the valley. {S}
2 And the LORD said unto Gideon: ‘The people that are with thee are too many for Me to give the Midianites into their hand, lest Israel vaunt themselves against Me, saying: mine own hand hath saved me.
ג  וְעַתָּה, קְרָא נָא בְּאָזְנֵי הָעָם לֵאמֹר, מִי-יָרֵא וְחָרֵד, יָשֹׁב וְיִצְפֹּר מֵהַר הַגִּלְעָד; וַיָּשָׁב מִן-הָעָם, עֶשְׂרִים וּשְׁנַיִם אֶלֶף, וַעֲשֶׂרֶת אֲלָפִים, נִשְׁאָרוּ.  {ס} 3 Now therefore make proclamation in the ears of the people, saying: Whosoever is fearful and trembling, let him return and depart early from mount Gilead.’ And there returned of the people twenty and two thousand; and there remained ten thousand. {S}
4 And the LORD said unto Gideon: ‘The people are yet too many; bring them down unto the water, and I will try them for thee there; and it shall be, that of whom I say to thee: This shall go with thee, the same shall go with thee; and of whomsoever I say unto thee: This shall not go with thee, the same shall not go.’
5 So he brought down the people unto the water; and the LORD said unto Gideon: ‘Everyone that lappeth of the water with his tongue, as a dog lappeth, him shalt thou set by himself; likewise every one that boweth down upon his knees to drink.’
ו  וַיְהִי, מִסְפַּר הַמְלַקְקִים בְּיָדָם אֶל-פִּיהֶם–שְׁלֹשׁ מֵאוֹת, אִישׁ; וְכֹל יֶתֶר הָעָם, כָּרְעוּ עַל-בִּרְכֵיהֶם לִשְׁתּוֹת מָיִם.  {ס} 6 And the number of them that lapped, putting their hand to their mouth, was three hundred men; but all the rest of the people bowed down upon their knees to drink water. {S}
7 And the LORD said unto Gideon: ‘By the three hundred men that lapped will I save you, and deliver the Midianites into thy hand; and let all the people go every man unto his place.’
